HOW DO I BECOME BORN AGAIN?

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh;
and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Marvel not that I said unto you, You must be born again.”
– John 3:6-7

There are many theological explanations about how to receive the spiritual “New Birth”, or the “born again” experience that Jesus describes in the 3rd chapter of the Gospel of John as a “must” for every person to enter into the Kingdom of God, but it all comes down to this: You have to truly want it.

That is, you first begin by earnestly desiring a personal and eternal relationship with God, through receiving Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. After you decide that you want eternal life in Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit living in you afterward, you simply “confess” what you desire by asking God for it out loud – after first sincerely believing in your heart what the Word of God teaches us about who Jesus Christ really is, and what He offers to everyone that comes to God through Him. Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul the apostle declares it this way:

“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

- Romans 10:9-10

There are two major parts to receiving the promise of Salvation as revealed in this scripture:

1) Believing in Jesus Christ &

2) Confessing Your Belief in Jesus Christ.

Again, we should first know and “believe” in who Jesus is: the Son of God who was raised from the dead, God who came in the Flesh, and Supreme King & “Lord” (or the highest and final authority) of all things in Heaven and on Earth (1 John 4:3 &15, 1 Corinthians 12:3, Matthew 28:18).

Then we should believe in what Jesus has done for us by shedding His blood to remove the “spiritual barrier” that was between us and God after the Fall of man in the garden of Eden, so that we can now become the children of God and spiritually reconciled to our Heavenly Father. In doing so, Jesus has also opened the way for us to:

1) Be forgiven of all of our former sins,

2) Be delivered, healed, and redeemed from every kind of evil, disease, or destruction in our life - right now,

3) & Be saved from eternal death (eternal separation from God) by receiving eternal life in Him instead.

In addition to those three things, Jesus’ work of redemption through the Cross has allowed for the Kingdom of God to “come upon us”, through the presence of the Holy Spirit who comes to dwell within us after we’ve been born again and we pray to receive Him as well (Matthew 12:28).

Through the Holy Spirit abiding within and “upon” us, we can receive guidance and intimate communion with God, along with miraculous power and “abundant grace” to assist us in bringing in the reality of God’s Kingdom and God’s will “on earth, as it is in Heaven” – as fearless witnesses and faithful disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, (Luke 4:18, Matthew 6:10).

Once we have acknowledged (with our mind) and believed (with our heart) all that Jesus has accomplished for us (His “testimony”), we can now put this “knowledge” of Him into action, through prayer and “confessing with our mouth”, as it says in Romans 10.

When you pray for salvation, you first confess to God what You believe about Christ, then you ask God to make you born again, and finally, you receive Jesus into your heart, as your “personal Lord and Savior” – by faith in the truth that God has heard your prayer.

Therefore, scripturally speaking,
this is all it takes for a person to become “born again”:

1) Know about Jesus

2) Believe in Jesus

3) Confess Jesus

4) Ask Jesus into your heart

5) Receive Jesus into your heart

Of course, there are no “formulas” with the things of God, and people can become born again through many different and unusual circumstances – but generally, this is what the Word of God promises in the case of someone sincerely seeking to know God who follows the outline in Romans 10:9-10.

“Receiving Jesus”: the Key to Becoming “Born Again”

Many people say that they “believe” in Jesus,
but not all of them have received Him into their hearts.

It’s receiving Him into our hearts that makes all the difference because this is what initiates the New Birth experience that transforms us into the “children of God” and gives us spiritual access (“right”) to the Kingdom of God & to Eternal Life.

As it is written: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
- John 1:12

“Receiving Jesus”’ takes place after we believe in Him, and once we have “received Him”, we are spiritually transformed (“born again”), and then the spiritual translation of ownership (out of the power & authority of darkness and into the Kingdom of Light) takes place as well (Colossians 1:12-13, John 8:44):

“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh,
fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind,
and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.”
- Ephesians 2:1-3

At this point, if you know you have not yet received Jesus into your heart and become born again, you should say a prayer to become so right now.

It doesn’t need to be a very long prayer, but it should be genuine and from the heart – because that’s where God is always looking (1 Samuel 16:7).

If you don’t know where to begin, here is an example prayer, using the scripture verses we’ve already seen:

“God, I come to you now and ask to receive Jesus into my heart as my personal Lord and Savior, and become born again. I believe that Jesus has been raised from the dead and is alive now. I confess with my mouth that Jesus is my Lord. I receive you, Jesus, as my personal Lord and Savior. God, You are now my Heavenly Father and I am your child! Thank you for saving me and causing me to be born again! My sins are washed away and I am right with you now! I give you my whole heart and I ask You to use my life for Your glory. Thank you for giving me eternal life in Jesus’ name! May I love and follow You all the days of my life. Amen.”

Congratulations!

Receiving Jesus as your personal Savior & Lord and giving Him your heart was the best thing that you have ever done!

This is the most important decision you will ever make because this decision will affect you for all of eternity.

You are now a child of God who has authority over all the works of the devil in the Name of Jesus (Luke 10:19), and you now begin the amazing journey of following Christ even further into Eternal life & the Kingdom of God.

Begin to daily read through the New Testament, and pray for God to give you wisdom (James 1:5, Ephesians 1:17-19) and lead you to the best place for you to regularly fellowship with other born-again Believers and learn more about the Word, the Spirit, and the Kingdom of God.

Also, begin to seek the Lord in prayer about making a visible declaration of having committed your life to Him through the beautiful & powerful experience of water baptism as well (Romans 6:4, Acts 22:16, Matthew 28:19, & 1 Peter 3:21).

Praise the Lord and welcome to the wonderful family & the Kingdom of God.
